What is a Disciple? “Follow Me”

Matthew 4:18-22

There are volumes of management and human resource books written on team-building and the art of creating winning teams in sports, business, education, and politics. Probably no secular author would ever recommend the method Jesus employed when he chose his disciples. Seriously, what a bunch of losers! Yet these “losers” turned the world upside down.

Jesus commands us to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). The basic definition of a disciple resides in Matthew 4:19, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

1. “Follow me”—a disciple is one who knows and follows Christ
2. “I will make you”—a disciple is one who is being changed by Christ
3. “Fishers of men”—a disciple is committed to the mission of Christ

This week we will focus on being a follower of Christ. This part of the definition requires a head-level change. A disciple knows who Christ is and makes the decision to follow him.
