Nathanael’s response to Jesus was one of honesty: “How do you know these things about me?” Jesus answered that he saw Nathanael under a fig tree before Philip found him to bring him to Jesus. In New Testament times, a fig tree provided a place for meditation, study, and shade. It was removed from the hustle and busyness of one’s home where cooking, activity, and distractions took place. Jesus literally knew where Nathanael spent his time and knew what he was seeking. Nathanael responded with faith that Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah. What Nathanael realized in his first visit with Jesus, other disciples did not realize until after his death and resurrection.
