Stage Four: The Spiritual Parent

Acts 11:19-30

Think like a children’s storybook: See Barnabas. See Barnabas encourage.

Barnabas, the “son of encouragement.” He was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. Barnabas: Disciple AND disciple-maker.

See what happened as a result: “And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord” (11:24). So many people came to Jesus that Barnabas needed Saul (Paul) to help him disciple them all. “And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (11:26).

What do you suppose Barnabas and Paul did that “outsiders” noticed and branded them as “Christians” (meaning little Christ, or Christ-like)?

Spiritual parents are disciple-makers. They encourage others in the Lord. They minister and care for others. They teach everything Jesus told them to. They teach Christ-followers to go and make disciples.
