Matthew 20:20-24

James and John were both concerned about their place in eternity and possibly asked their mother to ask Jesus if they could get the best seats in the house. Jesus made it clear to them both that suffering comes before glory. Jesus said numerous times, if you want to be first, you must be last. James was very close to Jesus; he was in the inner circle of three. However, he wanted more. In what area of your life are striving to be first? Are you fighting for a promotion at work? Are you striving to be the best, most popular student at your school? Are you hoping for mother or father or friend of the year award? Jesus made it clear that we must serve others and put others before ourselves if we want to be truly "great.”
