1 John 4:7-12

The Apostle John gives us a simple, yet profound, definition of love by writing “God is love.” John is telling us love begins with God and can be most fully understood by looking at his nature and characteristics. God demonstrated his love by giving his only son to die for us for us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, NIV).

We live a life of love by the words we choose and by the attitudes and actions we display toward others. Showing and acting in love indicates we are living a life under the direction of the Holy Spirit of God. Living a life of love is indicative of bearing this first fruit of the Spirit characteristic in our lives.
