Stage Three: The Spiritual Young Adult

1 John 3:16-18

Salvation is entirely based upon love and sacrifice. Jesus willingly gave his life, enduring the pain, humiliation, and torment of the cross in our place. We deserved this cruel punishment.

We are called to be like Christ. We will be called upon to make sacrifices that might cost us our health, wealth, and, yes, even our very lives. Achieving success, wealth, and power should never be our primary objective. Solomon realized this in his old age and observed: “Everything was meaningless,…a chasing after the wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:2, 6).

In order to mature in our faith, we ask God to develop in us a genuine desire to serve him and his children. Then we obediently follow through to completion the tasks God sets before us. As we develop the discipline of sacrificial service and love, we will begin to move into the next stage of our spiritual development: becoming a spiritual parent and a “disciple maker.” We will learn about this critical stage next week.
