“Love does not Seek its Own”

Mark 10:32-45

James and John were two of Jesus’ closest friends. There are several occasions in the Gospels when they, along with Peter, were specifically pulled aside by Jesus to discuss in greater detail one of his parables, sermons, or miracles. Despite all of this individualized attention, James and John still did not fully comprehend Jesus’ message concerning his death and resurrection.

Like many people today, James and John selfishly admired the glory and authority of earthly rulers instead of trying to model their lives after Jesus’. While there is nothing wrong with aspiring to greatness, we must be careful how we define “greatness,” and why we want to achieve it.
