Simeon and Anna - Luke 2:25-38

Two senior adults recognized the “thin place.” Simeon was looking for it. So was Anna.

When Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus (he was just several weeks old at this time) to the temple to dedicate him to God, they had no idea what was about to happen. Simeon had received a promise from God—he would recognize the Messiah when he saw him. In the midst of many people making their way in and out of the temple that day, Simeon saw the young couple. Though he was not the official parent/child dedication minister, Simeon took Jesus into his arms and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving to God and a blessing upon the child. He then spoke to Mary and Joseph, alluding to the mission of the Messiah (2:34-35).

As they walked away from this impromptu dedication ceremony, an eighty-four year old widow named Anna, stopped Mary and Joseph. Standing before the family, she gave thanks to God and urged all who could hear to cast their eyes upon the “redemption of Jerusalem” (2:38).

Thin places don’t just involve God. They involve all of us. He may use you to reveal himself to those who need him most. Simeon and Anna were in the right place at the right time, not by accident, but because they believed God.
