Isaiah 40:3-8

The Ugly Preparations

As you read today’s scripture, did visions of ever-changing detours and rough, uneven roads cross your mind? After all, how long have we lived with construction along I-35 East?

Isaiah was not contracting or politicking for physical road repairs. The rough roads of Israel were a graphic reminder of the rough path that God’s people were on because of their disobedience and rejection of God. Isaiah was calling for repentance of sin and a return to God. And one day, God promised he would reveal his glory through his Messiah. One day, the “construction” would be completed.

The words of the hymn writer, John Sammis, remind us of the path God has for us as we work and as we wait:

“When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word,
What a glory he sheds on our way!
Let us do his good will; He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.”

As we celebrate Jesus’ birth, may it be a reminder to walk daily with him and a call to obedience to him and to his Word.
