Ugly Christmas - Advent Week 4:

Isaiah 9:1-7

The Ugly Preparations

Imagine living in captivity or living under an invading regime. That’s hard for us to do because we live in America—the land of the free and the home of the brave. But what if political situations changed?

In today’s Scripture reading, two of the tribes of Israel—the northernmost tribes—were in that situation. They had borne the brunt of Tiglath-pileser’s conquering campaign against Israel. They were living in captivity. The Israelites were living/walking in great darkness (oppression). Talk about an “ugly” situation.

In the midst of their ugliness, God sent a message of hope through Isaiah the prophet: a child would be born.

And not just any baby—Isaiah declared the Messiah would come, the one who would rule on King David’s throne!

We may not live in physical captivity, but there is certainly spiritual bondage in Lewisville, TX, and across this country. We live amidst the ugliness of sin and all its traps. Jesus brought us hope and forgiveness. He also promised to come again. We celebrate Christ’s first coming while we also await His return.
