The Ugly Purpose

God’s economy is upside down. God’s economy is the least are the greatest. God’s economy is calling the things that are not as though they are. God’s economy is that death brings life. God’s economy is reducing the totality of himself to a baby to satisfy his own ugly, righteous requirement. God’s economy isn’t ours. As long as we live this side of eternity, we will never see as God does or understand as he understands.

So this Christmas, as you seek to remember and recapture that first Christmas, remember God gets it. He understands. He knows the depth of our ugliness because he lived it. In his economy, the ugliness of this Christmas and of our lives can produce unmatched beauty. And the Christ-Child we welcome anew is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He embodies what is most beautiful and most ugly of Christmas. And because of his life, his death, his resurrection, and the hope of his return, so may we.
