Philippians 2:8

The Ugly Purpose

Jesus did not come to earth with a pre-packaged default “submission” setting. Today’s verse tells us Jesus chose to humble himself to God’s ugly purpose. He chose. And he chose again and again. Jesus became obedient. Hebrews 5:8 says, “Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.” Jesus, the God-man, had to learn to obey God. And so must we.

More than likely, we will never be obedient to the point of death on a cross. But like Jesus, we must learn to pray, “Thy will be done.” When we don’t understand, when we wish the cost of obedience weren’t so high, when we come face-to-face with the darkness of our sin and others’, we can remember Jesus’ obedience. Jesus willingly drank every drop of the cup of suffering—every drop of death, every drop of addiction, every drop of our suffering and shame.

Is there a point of obedience you struggle with today? If so, know you are in good company. Jesus learned obedience too. Honestly confess your need for him. In faith, yield this area of your life to him.
