Romans 10:11-15Proclaiming the Message?
Sweet Little Jesus Boy and Go Tell It on the Mountain

Today’s two songs can be considered “yin and yang” spirituals. In Chinese philosophy, the concept of “yin and yang” is used to describe how apparently opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary. Compare . . .

Sweet Little Jesus Boy

Long time ago, you was born,
Born in a manger low,
Sweet little Jesus Boy.
The world treat you mean, Lord,
Treat me mean too,
But that's how things is down here
We don't know who you is.

Go Tell It On the Mountain

Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born.
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.

The somber Sweet Little Jesus Boy should act as a solemn reminder that there are many people who have not heard about Jesus, who do not know about his mercy and grace, just like the Ethiopian told Philip, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me.” This is why Paul implores the Romans to proclaim the good news of Christ to the world: “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” Go Tell It on the Mountain very simply recounts the story of Jesus’ birth when “God sent us salvation” and urges its listeners to tell everyone, everywhere “that Jesus Christ is born.”

How agonizing it will be on the Day of Judgment when we will witness person after person standing before the Lord with heads bowed low confessing, “I didn't know who you were.” And how even more agonizing it will be when those who are saved realize how many opportunities were missed to share the good news of Christ.
God has given to each of us who have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior a responsibility to reach out to others who need help understanding God loves them and wants to provide for them a life like no other.

Thoughts to ponder this Christmas season:

  • How is my life different because Jesus lives in me?

  • Am I proclaiming the “good tidings of great joy” so others can share new life in Jesus as well?

  • How can I share my faith in Jesus more effectively this coming year?

  • In whose life can I make a difference today?
