Luke 2:1-18

Shepherds—those on the lowest rung of the socioeconomic food chain of their day—were God’s choice to be the first missionaries. Luke 2 says that “when they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about the child.” Many times, as we consider Jesus’ words to “make disciples of all nations,” the task seems overwhelming. The shepherds draw us back into simple truth. As we encounter Jesus, we share what we know about him. Across social, economic, and cultural barriers, the shepherds shared what they knew. What about you? When is the last time you encountered God in such a powerful way that you were excited to tell anyone who would listen? Spend some time in prayer right now. Carve out a holy place where there are no Christmas shopping lists or things to do. Ask Jesus to meet you in a fresh way this Christmas. Pray this fresh relationship will spread to family and friends in your circle of influence who need to know the new life you have found.
