How to give money to the church without costing you a penny.” Really? Let me tell you how senior adults in our church are doing it. Since last January, many of our seniors have become directly involved in giving their time to First Baptist Lewisville by serving in FIRST VOLUNTEERS. Leesa Green, Ministry Assistant for Senior Adults and Missions, birthed and organizes this ministry. FIRST VOLUNTEERS saved our church over 700 man-hours of office work in 2018! Leesa discovered two things: 1) there are seniors in our church who desire to serve the church by gladly donating their time, and 2) the ministerial staff has many temporary needs volunteers can easily do to free them up to accomplish other ministry things. FIRST VOLUNTEERS have, in effect, extended the productivity of our church staff. That is like giving the church money without costing the volunteer one penny!

How does that work? Leesa discovers needs from the ministerial staff—what needs to be done and when—and sends out an invite to FIRST VOLUNTEERS. The volunteers know what the task is, how much time is needed, and how many volunteers are needed. The volunteer decides if their schedule is open to serve for that particular need. There is no pressure to participate every time! If they can help, they reply to Leesa and come to the church to do things like: assemble packets, glue popsicle sticks, tie glow sticks together, stuff plastic Easter eggs, and a variety of other things … and have great fellowship doing it! These simple projects impacted student camps, Operation Christmas Child, VBS, Guatemala Mission trips, and our fall festival, just to name a few.

The Bible in Matthew 6:19-21 speaks of treasures. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Sharon Allen, one of the FIRST VOLUNTEERS, recently spoke to a group of our senior adults and challenged them to “lay up treasures.” Sharon shared the following testimony.

“When I was gluing colored popsicle sticks together, I was not really thinking of the final product. Later, someone posted a picture of a little girl in Guatemala, smiling from ear to ear, holding a picture frame with her picture in it. The frame was made from colored popsicle sticks.” Sharon’s life will never be the same. She saw “full circle” what an hour of her time spent at the church can do for the Kingdom. She said FIRST VOLUNTEERS gives her “purpose, a social opportunity, and a sense of accomplishment.”

How about you? Are you on a limited income but feel the urge to give more? Or, do you just want to make your time more productive for the Kingdom by laying up treasures in Heaven? Through FIRST VOLUNTEERS, you can extend the ministry of our church without it costing you one cent. Contact Leesa Green today ( or 972.436.5502), get your name on the FIRST VOLUNTEER list, and start “giving.”

I'm not a senior adult, and I do work full-time M-F 8-5. BUT, if there's opportunities to serve outside normal bank hours, I'd love to be put on the list of possible volunteers!

Thank you!

Kudos to Leesa for this program. It provides senior adults a way to feel they are helpful & enjoy company of others. Shoutout to Sharon for sharing info. There are times in Evening on occasion. Ask Leesa to put you on the list. The old saw of many hands make light work is true. Pjqy9
