14 Days of the Old Testament in the New Testament
It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.
August 25 – Hebrews 8:7-13
We find Jeremiah 31:31-34 employed in today’s reading. The writer compared the way of legalism and the way of grace. Since all of us sin, God brought about a new way of saving us through Jesus. This new way is far superior to the old way. Even Jeremiah, centuries before Jesus was born, understood the wonder of this new covenant.
God’s way of grace was superior in the following ways: 1) the focus is on the inner person, not ritual (8:10), 2) we will have close fellowship with God (8:10b), 3) sinful ignorance of God will disappear (8:11), and 4) forgiveness of sins will be an everlasting reality (8:12).
Would you rather live under the old way or God’s new way?
