Week 2—Jesus’ 3D Life

Mark 1:35

Perhaps you know about a product called “Essential Oils.” These oils are natural organic compounds extracted from plants. They are used in a process called aromatherapy, which claims to improve physical, mental, and emotional health. I’ve never tried them so I cannot vouch for their effectiveness. However, I do know (through personal experience) essential practices needed in the Christian life. These essential practices all come from the teachings or examples of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As we think about our essential connections in life, let’s focus our thoughts this week to the “essentials” revealed in Jesus’ life and teachings.

In our scripture today, we read about Jesus rising up early, and then going away in order to be alone with God through prayer. Evidently, prayer was such an important part of Jesus’ life that others noticed. One day, one of his disciples made this request: “Jesus, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

Whatever you think your “essential connections” in life are, I’m certain from Jesus’ point-of-view the most essential connection is a personal relationship with God. Think about this: Jesus was the very son of God, and he found it essential to get away to spend time alone with God. How essential is it for us to do the same if we desire to be growing followers of Jesus?
