John 19:38-42

In April 2011, I was given an opportunity to tour Israel with a group from our church. We visited a garden tomb near a hill called Golgotha that may well be the tomb where Jesus lay. (Of course, no one can be 100% certain.) I have to say, stepping inside that empty tomb and seeing the place where Jesus’ lifeless body may have lain changed my perspective forever. I determined then and there to boldly proclaim my faith to whomever I meet and at every opportunity.

The day Jesus died, four other people had their perspectives changed forever. The criminal, crucified on the cross beside Jesus, asked to be included in his coming kingdom (Luke 23:39-43). The Roman centurion proclaimed, “Truly, this man was the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39). And Joseph and Nicodemus, members of the Jewish council and secret followers of Jesus, came out of hiding (John 19:38-39). They went to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus; most certainly, the Pharisees heard about it.

What was at risk when these two men made their true allegiance to Jesus known? What is at risk today when men and women reveal they are followers of Jesus?

Are you a secret believer? Do you hide your faith from family, friends, and coworkers? What is at risk if you reveal your faith? What can you do today to step out of hiding and let others know you follow Jesus?
